I constantly use up my hotspot data on my phone. Does the T-mobile network allow USB tethering through my T-mobile phone? Unfortunately, your hotspot data is used when using WiFi or USB tethering. Head to Settings > Personal Hotspot on an iPhone and toggle on Allow Others to Join. With Android, navigate to Settings > Network and Internet > Hotspot and Tethering > Wi-Fi hotspot and enable your phone's hotspot function. Our favorite Android phones include the Google Pixel 7 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, and OnePlus 11.

Next, connect your Android phone to an available Wi-Fi network or hotspot. To do that, go to: Settings > Wi-Fi > Turn On > Connect to a Wi-Fi network. After it has connected to a Wi-Fi network, connect your phone to your computer using a USB cable. When you get prompted for a USB mode (Connect as), select USB Tethering.
-- It is all about the money for tethering services, I think. Telecom companies or the government wants to control how you use your data or more easily monitor or filter your IP traffic. They want to segment the type of data used to standard smartphone data and track premium tethering data.
Usb tethering uses your phone data, not hotspot. Not true. It uses hotspot first. Once done with your hotspot then it uses phones data. so far it uses mobile hotspot and data on my phone. I'm waiting to run out of hotspot to see if the tethering stops.

6. Just a note for others out there, the setting is not very easy to find (at least on my Samsung Galaxy S3 mini Android 4.1.1). Go to Wireless and network -> More settings -> Tethering and portable hotspot -> Portable WiFi hotspot. Once there, you'll have to press the Menu button (bottom left of your phone) and up pops Timeout settings!
